FBT Fiber Splitter with Custom Splitting Ratios

    Classification:Products

Fiber Optic FBT Splitter is a passive optical power management device manufactured using the Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) process. It splits or combines optical signals by thermally fusing and tapering multiple optical fibers, enabling precise power distribution across output channels.

It can be fabricated into various splitting ratios as required, such as an even 50/50 ratio, an 80/20 ratio where 80% of the signal is directed to one side and only 20% to the other, or other custom splitting ratios.

Core Differences Between FBT and PLC Splitters

FBT (Fused Biconical Taper) Splitters and PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) Splitters are two mainstream passive components in optical communications. Their core differences lie in manufacturing process, performance, cost, and application scenarios, as detailed below:

    Comparison ItemFBT SplitterPLC Splitter
Manufacturing PrincipleMultiple fibers are fused and tapered; power is split in the coupling regionBased on quartz substrate, using semiconductor lithography and etching to integrate optical waveguides for power splitting
Operating WavelengthSupports only 850nm, 1310nm, 1550nm; wavelength-sensitiveFull-band coverage: 1260–1650nm; compatible with CWDM/DWDM, no wavelength limitation
Splitting CapacityMax 1×4; higher ratios require cascade (e.g., 1×8 = two 1×4 units)Native support 1×2 to 1×64; stable at high channels without cascading
Splitting UniformityPoor; up to 1.5dB loss variation for 1×8, easy uneven splittingExcellent; ≤0.5dB loss variation, highly uniform output
Size & PackageMostly bare fiber or ABS box, relatively large (e.g., φ3×60mm)Cassette type / ABS box / micro module, compact size, high integration
CostLow cost for low channels (1×2/1×4), mature processHigh cost for low channels; obvious cost advantage for high channels (1×32/1×64)
StabilityAverage; weak environmental resistance, medium long-term reliabilityHigh; wide temperature range (-40℃~+85℃), strong anti-interference, high reliability

    Selection Guide

    • For 1×2/1×4 low-channel applications with limited budget and fixed wavelengths (1310/1550nm only), choose FBT for high cost performance.
    • For 1×8 and above high-channel applications, full-band support (including E-band), or long-term stability, choose PLC, ideal for FTTH and 5G networks.
    • For standard cabinet deployment (19-inch rack, chassis), prioritize plug-in PLC splitters for compact size and easy maintenance.

    Key Features & Benefits

Our FBT splitters are characterized by compact size, high mechanical reliability, cost-effectiveness, and excellent channel-to-channel uniformity. They are widely deployed in PON (Passive Optical Network) architectures to efficiently split optical signals for FTTH, FTTB, and broadband access applications.
